Deaf Ministry

While it seems cliché, it is so true that where God guides, He provides. To prove this statement and to testify of God’s power, it is imperative to share the history of the deaf ministry at Indian River Baptist Church!
Pastor Douglass received a call in 2014 via TTY (teletypewriter) from a deaf woman in the area. She asked if the church had a deaf ministry because she and her friend wanted to attend a church in the area. Pastor replied, “We will!” and immediately began praying.

After making a few phone calls, Pastor reached a couple who recently started a deaf ministry at another church and handed that ministry off to the newly-trained deaf pastor. They were looking for another church to assist in ministering to the deaf AND training interpreters. Wow! Ephesians 3:20 says, “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” God is so good at providing exactly what is needed and then some. Not only did He provide us interpreters for the deaf, but He also provided training in ASL for the hearing!
Thus, the deaf ministry at Indian River Baptist Church was born through the sacrifice of a sweet couple willing to reach others for the cause of Christ. Steve and Joyce Houghton traveled to Edgewater weekly to accomplish the task of interpreting and training. While there is much to learn, God is providing the ability for the people of IRBC to “speak” ASL and minister to the deaf and hard-of-hearing in the local community.

If you are deaf or hard-of-hearing, please consider visiting our church. We are ready to minister to you!
